O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season in the early part of 2005, when she was a high school student. The judges were impressed with her singing and she made it into the Top 100 Round. O'Neil was praised highly by judges, but she suffered significant losses in the Top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated into the bottom 3 and bottom 2 respectively. Judges were amazed by her performance, and suggested viewers choose singers who were well-known like Melissa. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she was never in the lower three in the future. She was the judge. Werner was confident, following another two incredible performances, that O'Neil would be the winner of this year's Canadian Idol competition, as well as the first woman and the youngest contestant in history in the wake of the September 7 Finals of 2005. O'Neil's Canadian Idol victory was officially declared by the Prime Minister Paul Martin immediately.
